The St. Francis' Friday Five

Sally would like to dedicate this Friday Five for RevGalBlogPals to St Francis of Assisi. (She has written a nice history of St. Francis as well in the blog post.)

1. Saint Francis experienced a life changing call, has anything in your journey so far challenged you to alter your lifestyle? Yes, I have run into several events that has altered my life and lifestyle. The biggest turn in my life as of recent was the adoption of my children. I wouldn't trade the change for anything, I think it is a change for the better.

2. Francis experienced mocking and persecution, quite often in the comfortable west this is far from our experience. If you have experienced something like this how do you deal with it, if not how does it challenge you to pray for those whose experience is daily persecution? Sally, what a great question. I am so free from persecution especially living in the Bible Belt of the south. But how do I remember to pray for those who experience that daily Persecution? I think having children from China, going to China, and meeting people from China reminds me. I try to keep up with the news about persecutions in the countries, so I can pray for them. I am aware that Christianity was founded on the very blood, persecution and death of the early Christians. And my Savior was beaten, and killed.

3 .St Francis had female counterpart in St Clare, she was influenced by St Francis sermon and went on to found the Poor Clare's, like the Franciscans they depended on alms this was unheard of for women in that time, but she persisted and gained permission to found the order. How important are role models like St Clare to you? Do you have a particular female role model whose courage and dedication inspires you? If so share their story.... You know, I love the stories of people like Clare, and other women of the faith. We are just now beginning to appreciate their stories and writings. It is interesting that you would ask this question. I want to lift up my mom. I spoke about her yesterday in a book study group I have joined, and realized anew what a woman of faith, courage, and grace she was and still is. I truly admire her coming to know Jesus in her adult life, wanting to know more, growing in her faith, willingness to love and serve others. When all the civil rights movements were going on and churches had deacons standing at the doors ready to throw any black out attempted to come in like my church, my mom took a different tact. She went to their churches, had a friend that was black, helped them with their VBS, and other events. I really don't know what that cost her in the church, but in my eyes that raised her several notches high.

4. Francis loved nature and animals, how important is an expressed love of the created world to the Christian message today? I think we have neglected this message for a long time. I think it is more important now than ever, after all it is God's creation. In Genesis we are told to be stewards of the earth, and frankly we haven't been very good stewards.

5. On a lighter note; have you ever led a service of blessing for animals, or a pet service, was it a success, did you enjoy it, and would you do it again? No, I have offered at the churches I have served, but not been allowed to do so. Maybe one day. I have done funeral services for them, but that's not very light. But I do think the episode of the Vicar of Dibley on the service of the blessing for animals is one of her finest.

Missions, Missions and more missions

I am so glad to be part of a church that is involved in local missions as well as Global. On Sunday Sept 14 we had Mission & Service Day. This is the third one they have done. After the worship service, we have lunch and then span out across Huntsville at various sites to do missions. The types of projects: Painting wheelchair ramps for CASA, working at Terry Heights Elementary School, painting at Meadow Hills Baptist Church (soon to be the new home of Second Mile Pre-School), working at the Interfaith Mission Service offices, and repairing two homes with Huntsville Community Development. We also packed 77 Flood buckets to go to those who have been affected by storms. They also included something that the families with young children could do. This time the kids cleaned around the church. My kids went around cleaning windows. They had the best time and told me they could do this at home if I would buy them the squeegee and the spray bottles. Some of the older elementary kids went out to the work sites as well. It was very successful with a good number of the visitors joining in on the work.

On the Saturday before some of the church members were involved with the weekend of Service & Unity coordinated city-wide by the Interfaith Mission Service. This involved some of the similar and also different work sites. We didn't go instead we were at the United Methodist school of Missions. I attended the class on The Israel/Palestine Conflict taught by my friend Paulette West. It was an eye opener. The kids were with me at the school and someone took a picture of them, that I thought I would post here. The other picture is Bob working on Mission Sunday.We are also involved in a Capitol Campaign. We have committed 10% of the funds raised to seed not just a mission project but a justice project, something that will be long lasting, transformation, and address not just short term matters. Well, we are in the middle of discussing what that will be. In the last campaign they gave 10% to the Methodist Church in Kybarti. 10% of the regular offerings go to missions and that is beyond what is given to the United Methodist apportionments.

Friday Five on Sunday

Raise your hand if you know that today is Johnny Appleseed Day! Uh no, but I bet my kids did.
September 26, 1774 was his birthday. "Johnny Appleseed" (John Chapman) is one of America's great legends. He was a nurseryman who started out planting trees in western New York and Pennsylvania, but he was among those who were captivated by the movement west across the continent.
As Johnny traveled west (at that time, the "West" was places like Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois) he planted apple trees and sold trees to settlers. With every apple tree that was planted, the legend grew. A devout Christian, he was known to preach during his travels. According to legend, Johny Appleseed led a simple life and wanted little. He rarely accepted money and often donated any money he received to churches or charities. He planted hundreds of orchards, considering it his service to humankind. There is some link between Johny Appleseed and very early Arbor Day celebrations.
So, in honor of this interesting fellow, let's get on with the questions!
1. What is your favorite apple dish? (BIG BONUS points if you share the recipe.) Ooh, I know this one.

Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp

4 cups sliced peeled tart apples
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup rolled oats
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/3 cup cold butter or margarine
Vanilla ice cream (not optional)

Place apples in a greased 8-in. square baking dish. In a bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, oats, cinnamon and allspice; cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over apples. Bake at 375 degrees F for 30-35 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve warm with ice cream if desired.
Yield: 4 servings
Prep Time 15 min.
Cook Time 30 min.

2. Have you ever planted a tree? If so was there a special reason or occasion you can tell us about? Wherever Bob and I have lived we have planted a tree. We haven't planted one yet, but probably will at this new location. I just think it is a good thing to do, it beautifies, helps with pollution, and God's creation.
3. Does the idea of roaming around the countryside (preaching or otherwise) appeal to you? Why or why not? No, not really, okay then, why am I a Methodist who use to be circuit riders roaming around the countryside preaching and planting new churches? Good question. I have an old homebody spirit inside of me is the best reason I can give.
4. Who is a favorite "historical legend" of yours? Why do people like to ask if you have favorites, then you have to make a choice and commit to that choice and there are so many choices, oh my, how does one make one? I would have to go with Annie Oakley; cause she was a woman, a heroine, a straight shooter and a cowgirl, and I wanted to be one!
5. Johnny Appleseed was said to sing to keep up his spirits as he traveled the roads of the west. Do you have a song that comes when you are trying to be cheerful, or is there something else that you often do? "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine....".

And the bonus question is....can you sing the Johnny Appleseed blessing? You bet I can, its my kids favorite presently;

Sunday Prayer (late Edition)

Gracious God,
Thank you for this day.
Thank you for your presence in our lives.
Thank you for this day of worship and focus on you.
Thank you for your goodness to us.
Lord, forgive us when we take you for granted.
Forgive us when we take others for granted.
Forgive us when we take ourselves for granted.
Thank you for your forgiveness, may we live our lives as your forgiven people.
Lord we are grateful that our leaders care about the economic situation in our country, but Lord, can they go a little further than just Wall Street to Main Street to down the street to across the street and to those who make the street their home? Lord, may we do our part to make it so.

Sunday Prayer

Gracious God, today as we labor in your vineyard, your Kingdom, guide our work.
As we stand in the pulpit with all our labor for a sermon, may all that is said bring forth fruit.
May your vineyard flourish, may your Kingdom flourish.
May your spirit flow forth like water watering the land, may our souls be filled with your goodness, your mercy, your kindness.
Oh Lord we pray for our brothers and sisters
who were devastated by the power of hurricane Ike.
Oh Lord we pray for those who have lost their homes,
lost their jobs, lost their savings in this economic crisis.
Lord, presently, life just doesn't seem fair.
Life seems precarious, and unsure.
Lord we turn to you to right the wrong, bring peace to war torn lives,
comfort to those who are in pain and suffering, and love to those who feel unloved
Oh Lord the list goes on of the needs in this world.
How do we find the words, to say, except to turn to you our rock and our salvation.
And so Lord to you we turn and place our trust. Amen

Forgiving and ever merciful God, forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Help us to forgive when it is the hard thing to do. Help us to forgive one another for the slights, and big hurts as well just as you have forgiven us. Help us to remember that when we forgive we let go of wounds, pain, hurt and anger that would bind us and keep us from being free. Help us to remember that forgiveness does not mean we have to stay in abusive relationships or situations. Lord thank you again for the multitude of forgiveness that you have for all.

Lord as we remember this week the events of 9/11, help us to forgive those who caused these acts. Help us to continue to support and encourage those who were traumatized that day and those who still deeply miss their loved ones.

And Lord once again we lift up those in Texas and surrounding areas that have been impacted by hurricane Ike. We pray for the other countries that have also been impacted by the recent hurricanes. Help us to reach to out to our brothers and sisters in these areas with loving kindness and good will. Amen.

Sunday's prayer

Merciful God,
we ask that your loving kindness be showered on the communities of faith we serve. We ask that where there is conflict that there is ability to speak the truth in love. We ask where there are divisions that restoration would be brought about by the power of your love. Help us to be ministers of reconciliation in a world full of hate, pain and alienation. And keep on forgiving us, so that we might learn to forgive ourselves and in turn forgive others.

We pray also for all those who have experienced the devastating power of hurricanes this season, and the ones still come. Amen.

Gustav

Today, I am thinking of those who were in the path of Hurricane Gustav.

I lived through hurricanes growing up in Florida. I know their impact.

And so today I say a prayer for all who evacuated and left behind their homes and don't know what they will come back to. Those who once again lived through another threat after living through the devastation from previous hurricanes not so long ago. I say a prayer for those who lost loved ones. I say a prayer for those in other countries who don't have the kind of resources we do to rebuild, help, and support. I say a prayer for my friends in Mississippi along the Gulf Coast. I say a prayer for those I do not know. I say a prayer for those now in the path of Hannah, Ike and any others in this Hurricane Season. Lord in your mercy hear our prayers.

And may our prayers become one of action and love as well, amen.

"This Old House"

It feels funny calling a 40 year old house, old, but it is. It just isn't as old as some. But it is is a house that has not had a lot updated to it over the years. The last owners, moved out and let their adult daughter and her husband move in to rent it and keep it up. That didn't work for a variety of reasons. The carpet was the original carpet and so has to be replaced. The first place Bob did that was in the room we made into an office. The daughter had cats, and they put the kitty litter box in this room on the carpet. Okay you get the idea. He ripped it out immediately on moving in. Laid down laminated flooring. Really looks better. So now we are slowly taking out the carpet and putting down new flooring.
The next room to get worked on was the family room. It had dark wood paneling, and yes the old carpet with multiple stains. Bob and I chose some colors to lighten it up. I didn't want to go with just cream or white or tan, so used a color called Shrimp toast from Lowes. It is very nice and has added color and lightness to the room.
Did I mention the old wallpaper from forty years ago? We are taking the wall paper down also and repainting the walls. The next room we are going after is the kitchen. The cabinets, flooring is dark. The walls had this colorful wall paper, and some tiles over by the sink. Bob and I are trying to decide on a color to use. They had bright orange and green and yellow, a bit overbearing. Bob wants to go with yellow, I am not sure what color I want.
Bob is very happy doing this, it has given him great sense of accomplishment.
Why didn't we just buy a newly built house? Cost, and size. I liked them, but they cost too much and didn't have the room we felt we needed for the three kids. This house had the rooms and the right price. Plus Bob can be Bob the Builder!

All this remodeling reminds me of my own life. If I let myself go physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally then I will be in the shape of this house, in much need of repair and updating. And I have to be honest, I haven't kept myself up as well physically as I need to. I am back walking regualarly and eating healthier, and I can tell the difference. I am hoping this will lead me to even more care for my body and health. And what about mentally, have I kept myself up mentally with reading, study, discussions, listening and learning? If not I need to assess this and shore up where I am weak. I am trying to learn how to minister to and with young adults. And what about emotionally, have I paid attention to my emotional health? I have had to work a long time and a hard time on this area, and continue to work on my emotional health. Although I tend to neglect myself when stressed, and right now I am going through a stressful transition. And what about spiritually, have I paid attention to and maintained my spiritual life? They say that Pastors are the worse at doing this. To be honest there have been times in my life when I have neglected this area of my life, and there have been other times I have spent lots of time. I know with this transition, that I cannot neglect my spiritual life, I need to be intentional about my quiet time with the Lord, prayer and meditation. This is a busy church and position and I could easily get caught up in it.
All these areas are interconnected to make for a healthy self a whole self. One affects the other. I don't want to end up like this old house, in much need of repair. So I need to attend to all the areas of my life. The good thing about this old house is that it has a good foundation, good structure, and a good roof. My life has these too, and it makes for easier repairs and daily attention to those areas of my life. How about you?

Transitions

It is hard to believe that we have been here for three months. As one person said it seems like you have been here a lot longer. It has been a busy three months. Alot of mental transitions to make and learn. They do worship differently here, and I have goofed several times, even though I try to be prepared. And of course there is all those little things no one has told you about that are done a certain way and you find out as you go along. But even with it being busy it has been a good time, and I feel I am transtioning into Trinity well.

The kids are now back at school, and I tell you that has been a hard transition for them, especially Zachary. I think he really worried about friends and being liked. He had so many of them in Florence and he grieved them alot. They also have a different way of teaching grammar and math here. I even had had a hard time with helping the kids with it. It reminds me of when they went to the new math and the parents complained so much. But we have really had to deal with the kids emotions and behavior with the change.

And we have been in the transition to the new home from the old home. The kids have begun to like this house. I have trouble with some things are upstairs and other things are downstairs. I used to do laundry at night, and clean the kitchen at night. The laundry is down stairs where the kid's rooms are and so no doing laundry at night, well I do fold them at night upstairs. The kitchen and dining room is right over two of the kid's rooms and they hear every little footstep and noise, so I try to do that before they go to bed. Bob is busy repairing, painting, getting old wallpaper down, tearing up carpet and putting down new flooring. I don't know if from one day to the next if I can go into a room or not. We have got to redo the kitchen and I think that is going to mean eating out quite a bit since it needs a new stove as well. Everything is dark and darker, so we are lightening up the house, and it looks a lot better. He has accomplished a lot in a short time, but that means the regular day to day cleaning doesn't always get done. Oh well.

I'll try to be better about blogging and making time for it some how some way. This morning I could do it cause the kids were out with Bob washing cars. Yea

A prayer for Sunday

Gracious and loving God,

We come to you having spent ourselves in preparation for leading in worship, preaching and other duties of being a Pastor. We come some of us with heavy hearts, physical ailments, tired minds, weary souls and overworked bodies. We ask for your grace to face these hours, to deliver your message to your people, to stand strong when called to do so, to bring the healing touch to those who need it, to be the calm presence in the midst of the storms of life. We ask for your Holy Spirit to empower us with your love, your grace, and your mercy. We take this time Lord for the nurturing of our souls that we may serve you this day and all the days of our lives. Amen.

Lord,
Sometimes it seems like the boat we are in is too small and is being tossed to and fro in the storms of life. Lord calm our storms, calm us. Sometimes our fear is so great that even though we might want to walk on water we sink, reach out your hand to us Lord. Reach out your hand to those who are trying to walk faithfully in the midst of the storms of their lives. Lord help us when we have little faith, Help those around us who have little or no faith. Amen

Be in hearts to be able to know ourselves and to keep us calm in any anxious moments. Be in our souls to keep us centered and to guide our way with your Holy Spirit. May the words of our mouth, the meditation of our hearts, and the spirit of our souls be acceptable in your sight, O Lord. Amen

Friday Five Road Trip: What you Absolutely, Positively can't Leave Home Without

Singing Owl says; "We will be at a chaplain's convention when you all are answering the Friday Five Questions. I'll look forward to reading your answers next week when I get home. " At the moment we are trying to get the car loaded so we can hit the road, so this will be a simple F.F. This running around madly in order to leave has me wondering: what are the five things you simply must have when you are away from home? And why? Any history or goofy things, or stories?

#2 DVDs

#3 Drinks and food

#4 clothes

#5 GPS

And there is usually a WalMart somewhere or Dollar General. I'll just say, I usually forget something.

And we'll have fun, fun, fun....

Whooh between work and all the socializing I am tired.
We went over the mountain last night to a friend's church for a pool party and had a blast. She served in Florence when I was there, and her daughter was in the same school and grade with my girls. They have been so excited to be back together. Her little boy is a little young for Zach but they are making friends.
We have been to a couple of functions involving Families with Children from China. We made new friends and got reaquainted with old friends. The couple who was in our first adoption group is back in town for the Summer. They were at one of the recent functions and it was neat to be wtih them again. Katy and Sarah, their daughter don't really remember each other, but it didn't take long for them to be playing together. We have been to Chuckee Cheese and up on the Mountain at Monte Santo for a picnic. They'll be having a pool party in August.
We went down to Bham to the Zoo for Family day sponsored by the Children's Hospital and Zach's and Kara's Doctor. Now that was fun! Saw some other families we know as well.
The choir had a party at the lake and we went to that. It was fun to be with the choir members. It gave us a chance to meet some of them. The lake house was beautiful.
This weekend we will go back to the lake for one of the Sunday School parties. A chance to meet that group of people. More kids will be there also.
I have breakfast in the morning with a friend. And Thursday I go to Bham for a training session.
The district will have a clergy picnic in August.
Its VBS time here and it is noisey, fun and exciting this week. We will have a back to school party also for the kids on Aug 3rd. There are several families in the church who have children that will be at the same school with ours. We have also met more of our neighbors recently who have children our kid's age.

And we'll have fun, fun, fun til her daddy takes the t-bird away.

Sower of the seed,
You know each one of us inside out. You know our coming and going. You know our thoughts and our feelings. And you love us deeply. Your love cries out to all who will hear it. Lord may we hear your love today. May we sow the seeds of love in a hungry world starved for true love—your love.

Friday five on Saturday:What's in a name

REVHROD bring us this great Friday Five from RevGalBlogPals. I just didn't have time to do it on Friday, so I thought I would do it today. Its a good one, and I have missed doing them.

If you are a regular reader of Songbird's blog, you know that "The Princess" has requested a new name. Her older brother changed his "secret identity" a while back and now this lovely young lady is searching for a new name on her mother's blog. This got me to thinking. How do we come up with all of these names? There must be at least a few good stories out there.

In honor of the Princess I have posted a picture of one of my favorite members of fictional royalty, Robert Munch's "Paperback Princess." She is a brave young woman who doesn't need anyone else to fight her battles. And she knows that what is most important isn't tiaras and finery but what's on the inside. If you haven't read this little fairy tale, I highly recommend it. But I digress.

So how did you come up with your blogging name? And/or the name of your blog? The first name of this blog came from the Vicar of Dibley and my love for that show. Iwas serving in a little town of Wadley and so named it Vicar of Wadley. (I must be an Anglican wannabe.) When I moved to Florence to serve St. John, I just couldn't the theme of Vicar of Dibley to fit so in my own uncreative way it was St. John's Rev Abi. For this move I asked for some ideas and thoughts from my blogging friends. They were ever so helpful and so I came up with the present name. Think about it, Abi Road, the Beatle Album. The long and winding road, one of the verses in a Beatle song. It kept going through my mind like an ear worm and stuck. My blogging name is so uncreative. It just is.
Are there any code names or secret identities in your blog? Any stories there? My blog has no secrets, no codes, no hidden identities, so no stories there. I wish I was more creative in my writing like so many of you all.
What are some blog titles that you just love? For their cleverness, drama, or sheer, crazy fun? Oh my there are so many do I really have to choose. So many are so creative, so beautiful, so funny, so inviting.
What three blogs are you devoted to? Other than the RevGalBlogPals blog of course! Frankly as of late, I haven't been able to devote myself to any even my own. So sorry can't answer this one and so sorry to those I used to read faithfully.
Who introduced you to the world of blogging and why? Not a person, but a search engine, google brought me to reverend mommy when I was looking up something. And from there it grew. I have tried to introduce others to it as well.

Bonus question: Have you ever met any of your blogging friends? Where are some of the places you've met these fun folks? Oh indeed I have met a many of them at the Festival of Homiletics, Atlanta, Myrtle Beach, conferences. I wish I could meet you all. I hated missing Festival of Homiletics this year and The Big Event. Perhaps this next year it will be possible to be with you all again. Good bonus question.

Bonus question 2: I live with two princesses, and I will have to get this book for them. There is nothing like living with princesses unless you live with a Prince who thinks he is the King and that's another story.

Bishoop Willimon is coming back for four more years

Bishop Willimon to return to North Alabama for another four years
On the final evening of the 2008 Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference, it was confirmed that Bishop William H. Willimon will continue as the Episcopal leader of the North Alabama Conference for another four years.
This announcement was made when the SEJ Committee on the Episcopacy reported the assignments of the Bishops within the Southeastern Jurisdiction.

Prior to the Jurisdictional Conference the North Alabama Conference Committee on Episcopacy released a statement requesting the reassignment of Bishop Willimon to the Birmingham Episcopal Area. The Committee said, “The Conference Committee on Episcopacy celebrates the strong vision for growth and change to grow more disciples of Jesus Christ that Bishop Willimon has brought to the laity and clergy of the North Alabama Conference over the past four years.
“As we go forward into the new quadrennium, the members of the Episcopacy Committee are committed to a close partnership with Bishop Willimon to define steps and strengthen relationships to enable us to reach our vision.”

Sunday Prayer

Sunday prayer

Lord, on this holiday weekend, when people are out of town, we pray travel mercies for them. We pray for rest and renewal for all. We pray for ourselves as we come to worship you.

We remember today Lord, the sacrifices that have gone into the making of this nation.
We remember that we have freedom and at the same time pray for those who do not.
We remember that we have the right to a fair trial, and pray for those where there is no justice. We remember we can pursue happiness, while we pray for those who at best can only survive.

Lord today we bring the sacrifice of our love, our selves, and our souls,
may it be a sweet smelling fragrance to you.
Amen

Working with persons in their twenties

Part of my job presently is planning our ministry for young adults. I inherited this from my predecessor. I won't be the one doing it, just in on the planning stages. Or at least that is how I understand it.
My question; Anyone out there already in minstry to this age group? Anyone having some success? Any ideas? Any thoughts? We are in the research phase at this point.
I feel like a fish out of water.

New Blog name

Okay, friends, I am playing in my mind with a new name for this blog. St John Rev Abi doesn't work since now I serve Trinity. Vicar of Wadley doesn't work, cause I am not in Wadley anymore, nor Florence. Vicar of Trinity? Vicar of Huntsville? Trinity's Rev Abi? The Great and Powerful Abi, or The Abi Wilke Experience? (this came from the Worship Coordinator.)

Stung by a wasp

Sunday afternoon, I and two of the kids were sweeping the front porch, steps and walkway of the grass from the recent mowing. I guess Bob wanted to be out there with us, because he was messing around with the front porch. The next thing I knew he had stirred up a wasp's nest and one of them was at my ear. He stung me good before he took off. Well, after yelling and scaring the kids, I then began to cry. My ear then begin to swell as well. We got some ice for it. The kids had run away from the front porch which was good. But now they are afraid to go up the front steps and porch. I wasn't able to sleep on that side that night either.

But besides that, I had a dead battery in my car when I went out to go to church Sunday morning. Yes, it was my first Sunday and I was to preach. Bob tried to jump start it but it wouldn't do it. He took me to church then. I did preach without further hitch and it went well. Bob replaced the battery on Sunday afternoon and it worked well. But the next morning it was dead again. He couldn't jump start it so he called for a wrecker and took me to work. You know what was wrong? Some how or another someone had turn the interior light on. I'm blaming Bob or the kids or me or that "somebody did it but not me" person.

But like I said, the Sunday morning worship went well. I have now been initiated. They had a reception welcoming us afterwards and many stayed to welcome us. It was rather overwhelming but nice.

A new day

Came to my new position today. I have an empty office. Someone joked that I needed to bring some books. I just came for the clergy staff meeting, but have stayed. I am learning all kinds of things today. My D. S. came and took me out to lunch. That was neat. Had a good time. Having a good time so far.

The kids accidently left the front door open and out went one of the dogs. Bob was able to chase it down and bring it back, thank goodness. Huntsville has leash laws and license laws. The kids were really upset and afraid we would be really upset with them, but we kept our cool. They were okay when I left.

Bob almost has the kitchen put together.

Moving out, Moving on, Moving In

Sunday was the last Sunday. I feel good about the sermon using the story of the call of Matthew, and the two healings by Jesus. I then celebrated the ministries we had accomplished together while I was at St John. I had sat in conference and made a list of all our accomplishments, it was quite a list. I celebrated the ongoing ministries of the church as well. I also shared my sadnesses with them. We had a nice goodbye luncheon then. I feel good about the closure.

This is my very last day at work here. The office is pretty much empty, except for the trash can.

I have a few little things to pick up from the house. We couldn't get all the food into the coolers we brought last time, so I came back with a cooler to get the food. The house has been emptied and cleaned throughly.

Tomorrow I start at Trinity with staff and worship meetings. I am preaching the first two Sundays to give people a chance to hear me and to meet me. Friday I am on-call. I'd say I am jumping in and getting to work. My 90 day plan is finished, I need to run over a few things with the Senior Pastor about it.

I like my new house. The kids like the new house. Hubby likes the new house. The doggies and cat like the new house. Its going to be good.

Still moving

As my secretary says, it is a long process to move. She should know she just moved into a new house. But we are moving into a new house and a new office.

The kids love their new house, new bedrooms to themselves and rec room.

Bob took the cat and dogs over yesterday, he said they are settling in well.

I am at the office tidying up. Got to go to conference tonight, Friday and saturday. I also have to come back for a funeral of one of our long time homebound members who died, the other night. They are waiting on out of town family to come in to be able to do the funeral. She was a much loved member of the church and as everybody said, she was our prayer warrior. I'll miss her she was a sweetie to go visit.

I sit in my office today, crying as I pack. It is so final.

Was at Trinity, Tuesday helping with a workshop. Really enjoyed being with everybody. They were so welcoming. They have been looking for furniture for us since we moved with nothing. They have found some things we need and will still be looking. I appreciate that.

Moving

Meant to post this earlier. We closed on our house Friday. The pod will be picked up today and delivered to our new house. The moving team will come on Tuesday to unload. Bob has already gone to Huntsville this morning with the trailer full of the things that well wouldn't fit in the pod and that you have to bring yourself, lawn equipment.

Kate and Kara have a game tonight and so I am here with them. We are packing all the last little things. And we have the responsibility of doing some of the cleaning as well.

The Pastor Parish committee is meeting with a candidate tonight and they may be bringing he and his wife over to see the parsonage afterwards. Are we ready? Well, as long as they know we are in the process of moving yes.

We will be back and forth between the two places for awhile. This coming Sunday is my last Sunday. From Thursday to Saturday, I will be at the Annual Conference meeting.

Got to get my First 90 day plan sent to the D. S., and the conference liaison.

All this to say, I'll have sporadic use of the internet, and little time to post. I'll try to keep you up on the move and things as I can.

Playing sorry can be fun

On Tuesday evenings, Zach and Kara have dance. Dad takes them to that. I keep Kate. She has started this ritual recently of wanting to play Sorry on our Tuesday nights together. So we play Sorry. Sometimes she wins and sometimes I win. The big deal is that we play something together. We talk, laugh, and have fun together.

I used to hate Sorry. I hated going all the way around the board, only to have one of the other players get a Sorry, and knock my player out. I hated starting all over again. I hated losing, which is more by what cards you draw than by one's ability.

But I have come to enjoy playing sorry with my little girl, sometimes winning and sometimes losing, and not caring which one it is. They say a sign of maturity is when you don't always have to be first, don't get jealous of the other person who wins or is first, you don't always have to win. I must be finally maturing.

Its not Tuesday, but I think I'll go play Sorry with all the kids.

The First 90 days

Is it worth it?

Two years ago when they did this workshop, it was still being formulated. It did not include the church leaders. I found it hard to introduce it to the church when I moved. It comes from a business model and it was hard to get them to understand the value, so it did not work.

This time they include the church members. Plus, Sheri Ferguson, from the Office of Pastoral Care and Counseling, teaches a section of it. She added a much needed dimension to the workshop. It also seemed to move away from business language and orientation to be oriented toward the church.

They give each of you a handout of the church's stats that you are going to. From that you are to determine if the church is a "turnaround church," a "on going successful church" or "a realignment church." This then helps you determine at what speed you will do things in the church. You are then to make a 90 day plan of how you will transition into the church.

The first time I went through this they had a followup meeting which was helpful also.

One thing is they have found that the conference has so many churches that are "turn around churches" that they are having to work on how to help with this transition. This also goes hand and hand with the NCD findings. In fact they have a workshop planned for the Pastors of Turn around churches.

I am going to a church as an Associate and so some of what I have to do is work out the plan with the Senior Pastor. The workshop is more geared to the Senior Pastor transitioning into a church. I really don't know how it will work this time around, but I'll let you know.

I will say that my present church leaders found the workshop very helpful and plan to put into place some of the things they learned.

Back home

We are back home from Florida. We really had a good time. We had breakfast with mom before we left this morning.
We drove all day today, and it was a long trip, especially for the kids. But we made it back safely. Drove through rain the last part of the trip.

I finished reading my book Miss Julia Strikes Back by Ann B. Ross. It was nice, light, leisurely reading.

I started rereading the book The First 90 Days: Critical Success Strategies for New Leaders at All Levels by Michael Watkins. I read it two years ago when I moved here. Those who are being moved had to go to a workshop based on this book. We then had to come up with a 90 day plan for our new appointment. I didn't quite understand everything this book said because it is business oriented. But I am understanding it this time around. Now to come up with a 90 day plan and turn it in.

Sunday prayer, Memorial Day Weekend

Merciful God,

Have mercy on us in our shortcomings, our failings, our railings against you and our sins.

Have mercy on us when we presume we can use war to fix what's wrong with the world or regions of the world.

Have mercy on us when we send young men and women to do the work of those who stay behind and decide when and where to send them, whose lives are then shed on fields we sent them to protect.

Have mercy on us when we don't honor those who naively put on the uniform to serve, who are too young to understand, and who have hope to make a difference.

Have mercy on us when we don't remember those who did give their lives on foriegn soil in wars numbered, named and un-named.

Have mercy on us when we ourselves cause war in our homes, our families, our friends, our work, our neighbors, our churches and within ourselves.

Thank you for your loving mercy, Lord.

Have mercy on us, Lord.Remind us that blessed are the peacemakers, for we shall be called children of God.

gone for memorial day weekend

We are down here in Florida for my sister's wedding. All three kids were in the wedding. It was lovely and they did a good job.
It is such a long trip down here and back. It takes alot out of us to do this trip, but the family was all going to be together. We have had a good time together.
I appreciate the church understanding and supporting us to come. I really don't know when we will all get back together again, with this move.
We have to go back by Tuesday morning, the kids have school.
Bob did a lot of work to get us packed and the pod loaded so we can move. When we get back there will be more to do, but not as bad as it could have been.
It has really been nice to be with family.

Packing, Packing, and more packing

Hi all, if you wonder where I have been? well the title of this post should tell you.
We are busy packing for our move to a new church and a new town. We have also been busy between here and the new town in the process of buying a house, the church doesn't provide a parsonage, instead they have a housing allowance. We also have been busy between two churches, finishing up the ministry here and then all the pre-visits to get ready for the new church. And then add in the regular parenting going ons with the end of the school year happening, dance recital coming up and ball games, oh yes, did I mention we had birthdays too.
Zach turned the big Friday and we had a big bash at Chuckie Cheese. He had a blast and got some really nice presents. We had a good time too. He is so proud he is six now. Yea!

So if you want to help pack or clean the parsonage come on over we could use the help.

Holy one, we pray for those who are suffering in China from Earthquakes, Myanmar from Cyclone, and those who suffer from starvation.

Lord we pray for your peace with justice throughout your whole world.

And now;

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

Young, Evangelical and for who? What?

Young, evangelical ... for Obama? By Haley Edwards a Seattle Times staff reporter notes that 15 percent of white evangelicals between 18 and 29, a group traditionally a shoo-in for the GOP, say they no longer identify with the Republican Party. This comes from a September 2007 survey by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. College-age and 20-something Christians may be leaving the GOP, but only 5 percent of young evangelicals have joined the Democrats, according to the Pew survey. The other 10 percent are wandering the political wilderness, somewhere between "independent" and "unaffiliated." Shane Claiborne, a Philadelphia Christian activist and author of "Jesus for President: Politics for Ordinary Radicals," has a different name for these folks: "political misfits."
Claiborne has traveled around the country the past several years, speaking and preaching mostly to college-age Christians who are "both socially conservative and globally aware." That makes them disenchanted with both major parties, he said.
"It's not about liberal or conservative, or Democrats or Republicans," he said. "I don't think it's a new evangelical left. ... There's a new evangelical stuck-in-the-middle."
"I think it's a new movement starting," said Amy Archibald, 19, a sophomore at the evangelical school. "Most of us would never blindly follow the old Christian Right anymore. James Dobson has nothing to do with us. A lot of us are taking apart the issues, and thinking, 'OK, well, [none of the candidates] fits what I'm looking for exactly.' But if you're going to vote, you've got to take your pros with your cons."
Judy Naegeli, 25, who works at a Christian philanthropy, says easy access to information about the world via social-networking sites, YouTube and blogs is the reason her generation is more concerned with social justice.
"It's changed our perspective. ... Each generation chooses their cause, and ours is AIDs in Africa, or poverty or social justice," she said.
Tyler Braun, 23, a Portland seminary student who opposes abortion and gay rights, said he'll probably vote for Obama because, since he'd would like to see U.S. troops leave Iraq.
Braun, the seminary student, said he's not totally committed to any candidate yet.
"I just keep thinking, if Jesus were alive now, he wouldn't necessarily be voting Republican," he said.

I am not surprised with this study and change in the mood of our country and young people. I wonder what this says to the church? And I wonder what we the church have to say to them? Are we listening to people like Shane Claiborne to hear what they have to say? Or have we lost touch and quit listening and caring? Perhaps Obama is listening or represents the possibility of change and betterment in our country. How can we the church do a better job than we are doing?

The Methodist church continues to shrink in numbers, in numbers of young people, and young people going into the ministry. Somewhere we are missing the boat, lost touch, and maybe we are even quickly sinking. What are we going to do about it? I don't think we have the luxory to say "Oh they'll come back when they have kids." cause it may really be too late then. And I don't think we should ever do that. Perhaps we need a changing of the guard, a willingness, a honesty, and an integrity that we don't have right now.

Gallup Poll gives Methodists highest positive ratings

Igniting Ministry is credited for the breakthrough in how the Methodists are viewed.

The question is; okay so what and now what? So what that we have a positive rating due to igniting ministry, isn't that nice. If are ratings are up, is our attendance up too? Is our outreach up too? Is our involvement in the world up too? Is our welcoming the stranger up too? How is this getting lived out in the local church? In the individual church member? And if we have this high rating, how come our numbers are still slipping? How come we have so many church closures? How come the number of young people going into the ministry is so low?
Yes, these are good numbers, good that we are viewed in a positive manner. I would hate for us to be seen other wise. Lets celebrate it, and keep building on this, and keep bringing it down to the local level.

UMNS — Methodists have the highest positive ratings of religious and spiritual groups in the United States, new research by the Gallup Panel shows.

Ninety-six percent of the 1,005 persons interviewed during the March poll had either a positive or neutral view of Methodists. Four percent had an overall negative view. The survey used the broader category of Methodists rather than United Methodists specifically.

Larry Hollon, chief executive of United Methodist Communications, credited The United Methodist Church’s 7-year-old Igniting Ministry advertising campaign for moving “Methodists” out of the pack. The advertising campaign primarily targets persons seeking spiritual fulfillment who may not necessarily have a church affiliation.

Hollon said new research by Barna Research Group indicates that the “Open hearts. Open minds. Open doors.” advertising slogan of Igniting Ministry is proving to be effective in communicating key characteristics of The United Methodist Church.

“One of the challenges that denominations typically face is that people don’t really know that much about them,” said Hollon. “The survey data gives us a snapshot of how others see us. The indication is that the campaign has helped to reframe people's indistinct perceptions about the church into something more positive.”

Gallup Poll

Methodists are one of the four U.S. religious groups with strongly positive ratings in the Gallup Poll. The others are Jews, Roman Catholics and Baptists. Broader groups of “evangelical Christians” and “fundamentalist Christians” did not fare as well, but still rated more positively than negatively, according to an analysis of the survey.

The random, demographically weighted poll was conducted March 24-27. Gallup says it has a margin of error of plus or minus 4% points.

Barna Research

The Barna study assessed 10 different statements about The United Methodist Church that reflect the intended communications within the advertising messages developed for the campaign. More than 1,200 respondents from six test markets were interviewed by the Barna Research Group in order to better understand how the denomination is positioned among the target audience of adults ages 21-60 who do not attend a United Methodist church and who are searching for something spiritually.

Among the findings:

58% of respondents agreed that United Methodists care for and support each other, compared to 43% surveyed in 2002

57% believed United Methodist accept you for who you are, up from 45% in 2002

41% said United Methodist help you find deeper meaning and purpose in life, compared to only 26% in 2002

51% said United Methodists help people facing personal difficulty, up from 38% in 2002

The survey showed that those exposed to the advertising campaign were much more likely to hold favorable views of The United Methodist Church than those who did not recall the advertising.

Story of My Mother-in-law

My sister-in-law Edie Sodowsky, wrote an article about her mom, my mother-in-law that was published this last month in The Lutheran Witness magazine, a publication of the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod. Congrats to Edie, she has tried several times to get published. It is a partial article and when she can get us the full article she will, and I'll post it as able. If you have a subscription you can read the full article. The article is about the period of time near the end of her life when she developed Alzheimer's disease and to her consequent death. She wrote it to help others and remember her mom. May it be of help to you.

Pentecost/Mother's Sunday's prayer

Gracious God, who did send down your Holy Spirit to birth your church, rain down your Holy Spirit afresh today, Heal the broken hearted, the divisions in our churches, the stuck ones, the proud ones, the desperate ones, the lonely ones, those who have given up and quit trying. Forgive us for where we have closed ourselves to your Holy Spirit, where we have impeded the Holy Spirit, or where we have stood in the way. Come Holy Spirit inspire the hearts of us your faithful, kindle in us your love that we may love you, others, and ourselves. Come Holy Spirit, renew your people, pour into us the power of your creativity; that your light will shine in the dark places of this world.

Holy one, we also today lift up moms everywhere; we who are moms presently, our moms, moms to be, moms who are now gone on from us, moms whose children have died before them, moms all around the world. We pray for those whose moms weren't able to really parent them, who were abusive, or had mental illnesses, or drug or alcohol abuses, other problems that affected their mothering. We pray for those who are childless not by choice; those who may be trying different medical treatments, or going through the adoption processes, or other means, or those who can't afford it at all. We pray for those who are not mothers by choice; whether by timing, situation, or just by choice, we don't want to leave them out as you don't. Lord we pray for moms whose children have made them happy and those whose children have disappointed them. We pray for those moms in countries that have less than we do trying to make sure their kids have the basics. We pray for those moms in countries who have to figure out how to protect their kids from war, the rebels, the terrorists, and the means of war left behind. And we pray for those moms, who have been through the recent natural disasters trying to remake life, provide shelter, and who may also grieve the death of their children.

We pray all this and more through the power of your Holy Spirit who birthed the church, and through the name of Jesus, Amen.

Celebrating women, celebrating moms

Introducing you to Liz McCartney of the St. Bernard Project
What's a young woman to do with her life? She had it pretty good in Washington, D. C. But living 1,000 miles away in Washington, Liz McCartney was haunted by images of Katrina's destruction and stories of people like Aguilar. In February 2006, she, her boyfriend, Zack Rosenburg, along with her mother went to New Orleans to volunteer. But it didn't end there. They quit their jobs and moved to St. Bernard Parish. Now they're dedicated to helping people rebuild and move back into their homes. To day, the project has enabled more than 120 families to move back into their homes. She has been nominated as one of CNN's Heroes.

Did it just say that the team mates of one team carried around the bases a member of the opposite team? Say what? Now that is the kind of player I want my girls to grow up to be like. I don't know about you all the buzz about celebrity moms really bothers me.

And Michelle Duggar being pregnant with her 18th is just crazy. The only way the family makes it is if the older ones pull a lot of the weight. And who could afford paying for all those kids? Well if you go on tv like they did, well maybe you can. It just seems overboard.

And finally let's celebrate our own moms.
My mom wasn't a celebrity mom. She was a fish out of water being a mom in the South. She was from the North; whose mom worked outside of the home and couldn't cook one little bit. It was a learning curve for mom who hadn't even planned to move to the South once married. I don't think she even wanted to have kids as soon as she did. But have them she did. She learned to cook, but to this day would rather not. She also worked part time while we were growing up to help pay the bills, but mainly she didn't work. It was hard on her staying at home and raising us kids, but she did it. She suffered from depression.
Being a mom now with three kids, I now know why she had a hard time. With three you are overwhelmed and things are happening all the time.
My mom was such a giver to not only us but to everybody. If there was a need she was there reaching out, offering help. She was way involved in the church, teaching Sunday school, training union and the children. And she was a leader of the women's group. (We were Baptist.) She helped start the meals on wheels at our church while we were kids. How did she do it all?
My mom went to work full time after we all finished school. She really was in her element then.
I celebrate my mom for her loving us, for her mothering us, for her teaching us about how treat others, and for teaching us about Jesus. Thanks MOM!

O living God, come and make our souls temples of thy Spirit.Sanctify us, O Lord. Sunday's Prayer: Ascension Sunday

Gracious, loving God,

Here we are Lord, once again finding ourselves looking up for Jesus, looking in so many places for God knows what sometimes. Sometimes God it seems if we are just looking for ourselves. God in the midst of all of this world’s distractions, business, and activities that we can all get lost in to where we can’t really see you; help us in the midst of this moment to see you. Help us in this moment of quiet, stillness, and a slow breath, see ourselves clearly see you. As we go about our day, help us to have eyes to see you.

And God just for a moment let others see Jesus in us. Amen

Prayer on Saturday

Almighty God,
As we prepare to preach, teach, and lead worship, guide our hearts our thoughts our words our hands.
It is so difficult for those of us who did not grow up in a faith tradition that saw this to be an important part of what they taught or preached to wrap our minds around the Ascension.
That may be a good thing, because we don't take it for granted that everybody out there knows the words, the scripture and its meaning. But God help us not to then over load everybody out there.
And it may be a good thing that we are from the traditions that did include it in its teachings and practice, because we are comfortable with it and can move beyond just teaching to the depth of the experience.
Where ever we are today with this Lord, inspire us that we too may be an inspiration to others, just as your son inspired those that day of ascension so long ago.
Amen

Wait and pray Friday Five.

Part of the Ascension Day Scripture from Acts 11 contains this promise from Jesus;"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”Then he was taken from their sight into the clouds, two angels appeared and instructed the probably bewildered disciples to go back to Jerusalem, where they began to wait and to pray for the gift Jesus had promised.Prayer is a joy to some of us, and a chore to others, waiting likewise can be filled with anticipation or anxiety....So how do you wait and pray? Seems like this is the theme of my life. How many times in the scriptures do we read this....

1. How do you pray best, alone or with others?
Depends on the situation, and need. I listen better on my own, I can be still and quiet better on my own.

2. Do you enjoy the discipline of waiting, is it a time of anticipation or anxiety? Are you kidding. I do not wait well. I think whether it is a time of anticipation or anxiety really depends on the situation, circumstances and how I am doing. I think the spiritual discipline of waiting can lead to it being more of a time of anticipation rather than being totally filled with angst. I think that is what I am trying to practice now the spiritual dsicipline. Thanks for the awareness that that is what this is, I had no idea. That helps.

3. Is there a time when you have waited upon God for a specific promise? Oh Yeah.

4. Do you prefer stillness or action? Both, I need the stillness to calm and center me. I need the action to put the energy to work and use somehow.

5. If ( and this is slightly tongue in cheek) you were promised one gift spiritual or otherwise what would you choose to recieve? Well I am glad you said it was tongue in cheek, because of the old saying be careful what you ask for, or the thing about asking for patience and getting instead the trials to develop it. So thanks but no thanks.

Bonus: It must be a requirement that if you are a songwriter or a band you must have one song about waiting. Movies like the theme waiting too. Harder to do with tv shows.
